Common Injector Related Issues

Diagnostics

The diagnostic software available to diagnose this vehicle can be very good, if you buy the right one of course and it can also give some very interesting information if you know what you are looking at and can be the opposite if you don't.

Injector failure

Injector Failure on this engine can be very common although the cause has many people confused and there are a multitude of stories and rumors as to the reasons.

Piezo Injectors  2006 - 2009 are the most common to fail due to the crystals inside the injector becoming damaged, Due to their poor life span they were replaced by Solenoid injectors 2009 - 2014.

Injector Seizure

We remove/replace a large number of Piezo injectors every week and in line with this engines history find it to be the most unpredictable engine we come across, you cannot predict if an injector will or will not come out easily regardless of the external condition these injectors can vary dramatically from pull out by hand to extreme force or even having to be drilled out, even on the same engine.

Solenoid injectors are far more reliable but can seize in dramatically tighter than the Piezo, they normally require removal for other reasons like timing chain issues etc as they rarely fail. these problems are also limited primarily to the vans as the cars rarely cause problems.

Many causes are floating about from metal corrosion to water damage etc though the cause is irrelevant if yours have failed the cost and speed of repair is usually far more important. It is common for the cause of seizure to be blamed on rain water running onto the top of the engine and causing corrosion which locks the injectors in. It is now a requirement for any manufacturers warranty claims that all four injectors to be changed together and for the scuttle panel to be resealed following replacement of injectors to ensure that any future warranty remains valid.

Removal is specialist work and we have found that chemicals, acids, releasing oils etc make little difference (despite what those selling them to you say) and it is quite rare for theses liquids to get to the point of the problem. Unless of course the injector wasn't that tight in the first place.

There are also 101 old wives tales on how to remove them ranging from removing the clamp bolt and driving around to drain or oven cleaner. we have yet to see these ideas work on a truly seized injector.

Injector bolts

In line with the seizure of injectors the bolts which hold them in suffer from similar issues and are regularly seized in usually snapping off when removal is attempted. We repair these almost daily.

Top bolt snapped off, second bolt clean, third still dirty as it was removed. (this is actually a good one)

Fuel Leaks

The metal fuel feed pipes are technically single use items and require changing every time they are removed. Everyone re-uses the old pipes even the dealers without issue but occasionally they can developed a leak a few days after being refitted this then requires the pipe to be replaced. This is usually restricted to the piezo injector pipes and is easily sorted.

We regularly find that the plastic return pipes are damaged by previous poor attempts at removal, either the retaining clips or seals can be broken or cut causing fuel leaks.

This is why we always carry a full set of spare pipes both plastic and metal !!

Turbo Pipe

It is common for us to come across damaged turbo pipes when we are asked to remove / refit them as part of the injector work, it is usually caused by attempts at removal by those who do not understand how the retaining clip releases, whilst a temporary repair can be done the only cure is a new pipe (£170 at the time of writing this) We also come across many missing clips and bolts , previously lost during stripping down the engine, We carry an extensive collection to combat this including the correct turbo pipe clip. Due to the cost we don't usually stock the turbo pipe itself though.

Wiring issues

Although quite rare the wiring to the injector can be damaged at the plug we carry replacement plugs to repair the harness when required.

A  P Autodiagnostics Ltd

We are fully equipt to remove and refit injectors to all the above vehicles and can also supply  brand new genuine replacement injectors which we carry on stock.Removal can require the stripping off of all plastics from the top of the engine and on some vehicles the wipers and scuttle panel below the windscreen. we can also repair snapped injector clamp bolts. and provide a full strip and rebuild service for this vehicle either onsite or at our base.

We stock Piezo and Solenoid injectors, fuel feed pipes, fuel return pipes, injector clamp bolts, turbo clips, various replacement bolts and harness repair plugs to ensure we can always get you going again.

Here's a picture or two of some of the nasty jobs we get to deal with (successfully of course)
